The Girl Who Could Fly

The Girl Who Could Fly

by Victoria Forester (2008)

Certainly not what I expected -- from the homespun country beginning to animal torture and mutant revolt!  I thought it was a story of a girl that didn't fit in reminding us to accept our differences and special talents, yada yada yada...

Soon after revealing her talent for unaided air travel to the simple townsfolk, Piper is captured by a secret laboratory designed to eradicate all un-normalness from the face of the Earth, even if that means drugging and torturing flowers, crickets, and children.  Lots of tension and twists, drama and unhappy endings for several characters, good and bad, and a slightly weak ending, but definitely entertaining.
