The Magician's Elephant
by Kate DiCamillo (2009)
Old fashioned, in a good way -- beautiful illustrations, magic, soldiers, orphans finding/being found by childless couple... It really does have an old time fairy tale feel to it, and the art is a big part of it (almost has a Hugo Cabret look).

Do you think kids will actually like reading it, though? I enjoyed it, but that was the thought I was left with at the end.
I had the same thought, and about other award/acclaimed "children's" books I've read lately -- do we like these books for kids or ourselves?
I've heard some great things about this book and really want to pick it up. Sounds fun.
